Software Updates, Upgrades,
and Compatibility Notes
TibetDoc

Types of Updates and Upgrades Offered:
There are two kinds of update to software, called major and minor version respectively.  We offer major version updates for a fee and minor version updates for free.  You must be a registered user of our software to obtain any kind of update.    Minor updates to our software contain either fixes to bugs or improvements.  We send these updates out regularly.  We go out of our way to fix problems and send out a new minor version with the fix.  However, the only way to hear about these minor updates is to register your software purchase with us.

Major updates are usually released once a year or so.  These updates contain many new features and improvements.  Again, the only way to hear about them is to register your software purchase with us.

Registration has significant benefits:
If you don't register with us after purchasing your software, you don't get the free updates.  Besides minor and major updates, we also send out information related to the software and to Tibetan Buddhist studies.  All registered users of our software receive this information.  For example, our translation committee has started a program of distributing free Tibetan texts for use with our software.  All registered users of our software receive notifications about this and related items. The only way to hear about them is to register your software purchase with us.  We never give out the addresses of people who have registered.  So, if you are a valid purchaser of our software but have not registered with us, please do it now! Send an e-mail using the link at the bottom of the page with information about what you purchased, from whom, and when.  We will register you and provide you with information by return e-mail about possible upgrades, both free and paid-for, and free texts and other reference works that are available to you.

Join Our List to Get All News:
The best way to stay abreast of news about the software, and especially of updates, is to join our Padma Karpo Translation Committee list at Yahoo.  We post all notifications about updates and full information about new features, fixes, and changes in the software on the list.  You can post questions there, too.  You can also ask questions about Tibetan language, Buddhist studies, and so on.  Note that the list is moderated so there is no spam or garbage posted. We do notify all registered users of updates by e-mail but because of the preponderance of spam and problems on the internet, this is not always effective.  Therefore, we strongly recommend that users join the list just mentioned.

Compatibility: Windows:
Versions 3, 4, and 5 of TibetDoc and TibetD Reader for Windows run in all versions of Windows up to and including Windows XP but will not run in Vista.  If you have one of these versions and shift to Vista, you will need to upgrade to version 5.2+ of the program.  You will also need to upgrade your Tibetan fonts and we will help you to do that on request.

How will you know if you have the wrong fonts with version 5.2+ of the software?.  With TibetDoc or TibetD Reader started, press Ctrl+W to get the font character window, then look at position number 129 of the Tibetan font on the window, such as Tibetan Machine.  If you can see the "spya" letter, your fonts are up to date.  If not, you have old fonts installed and should update them.  Download the Tibetan Machine fonts from this site's download page and replace your Tibetan Machine fonts with the ones in the package. If you are using one of our better quality fonts, such as Tibetan Calligraphic, Classic, Chogyal, or Dzongkha, you will need to contact us to purchase the update.

How to get Updates:

TibetDoc for WINDOWS All of our word processing products come with this software.  Updates are available.
The latest version is 5.231, released in November, 2009.  It is a free update for users with version 5.230 and a paid-for, major upgrade for users with versions less than 5.230.

The version number of your current program is shown on the splash screen when the program starts or can be found by looking under "Help, About" when the program has started.

The cost of an update can be seen on the prices page.  Updates are only provided to registered users.

You must have a valid copy of our software installed and must have registered that with us.  If you have both then use this to do your update.  If you have a pirated copy (there are plenty of you, we know) or have a valid copy but have not registered it with us, the update purchased through the link above will not work!

TibetD Reader for WINDOWS All of our dictionaries, texts, and reference works come with this software.  TibetD Reader is not the same as TibetDoc wordprocessor but the version numbers are kept the same so the comments about versions just above under TibetDoc apply equally to TibetD Reader.  Thus the latest version is 5.231, released in November, 2009.  It is a free update for users with version 5.230 and a paid-for, major upgrade for users with versions less than 5.230.  The cost of a one-time update and lifetime subscription can be seen on the prices page.
You must have a valid copy of our software installed and must have registered that with us.  If you have both then use this to do your update.  If you have a pirated copy (there are plenty of you, we know) or have a valid copy but have not registered it with us, the update purchased through the link above will not work!

The Illuminator Tibetan-English Dictionary for WINDOWS The dictionary is constantly being developed and improved.  Updates are available only from us and in two ways.  You can either purchase a one time update at any time or you can purchase a lifetime subscription.  NOTE: When you make your initial purchase of the dictionary, it comes with TibetD Reader.  Subscriptions and one-time updates to the dictionary do not include updates to TibetD Reader.  These updates must be obtained separately from us.
The latest version is 5.18, released on January 1st 2010.  New editions are released at six monthly or yearly intervals.  The version number is not the version number of the TibetD Reader software used to read the dictionary.  The version number is found on the first page "TITLE" of the dictionary when the dictionary is started.
The cost of a one-time update and lifetime subscription can be seen on the prices page.
Updates and lifetime subscriptions to the dictionary can be purchased here.  If you are a valid, registered user wanting an update, then use this to purchase an update or subscription.

Texts, Dictionaries, Reference Works for WINDOWS These all come with the TibetD Reader software listed above.  However, the Reader is not the actual text, dictionary, or reference work.  Our texts, dictionaries, and reference works are finished items and do not have updates (except for the Illuminator Dictionary, see above).  However, occasionally there is an improvement or addition.  Each has its own version and this is not always obvious.  Contact us if you have old software and would like to find out whether there is an update.
TibetD Reader for MACINTOSH and LINUX The current version of the Reader is 2.02. Version 2 is cross-platform compatible with both Macintosh OSX and Linux GTK+ 2.0+. Version 2.0 has full support for unicode. It reads, searches, and so on dictionaries both with transliterated Tibetan and actual Tibetan script. Updates to version 1.0 are done by making a new purchase. If you have not used the software before but would like to use it with these new developments, you can purchase the Mac / Linux versions of any of the three dictionaries that come with this software from Padma Karpo Translation Committee.

The Illuminator Tibetan-English Dictionary for MACINTOSH and LINUX The dictionary for the Macintosh is the same dictionary as for Windows, meaning that the contents and version numbers are the same.  However, we do not produce updates for the Macintosh at the same, regular intervals that we produce updates for Windows.  Generally, we produce the Macintosh updates at one year to eighteen month intervals.  We also do not have a subscription update program for the Macintosh.  However updates can be purchased, one at a time.  The latest version of the Illuminator available for the Macintosh is version 5.15 released in October 2007 .  An update to this version can be purchased here.  Note that this is an update only and requires a proper purchase of the dictionary at some previous time otherwise it will not function.  If you are a valid, registered user wanting an update use this to purchase an update or subscription.

A final reminder that we offer minor version updates with fixes and improvements for free.  If you have purchased a copy of our software, but have not registered, please contact us by e-mail (use the icon at the bottom of the page).  When we receive your e-mail, we will register you and provide you with the latest version of any software titles that you are entitled too.  Contact us if you have any queries.
