Free Tibetan Typefaces: Tibetan Machine and Tibetan Machine Web
Here is a complete Tibetan typeface for use on your computer. It is the Tibetan Machine typeface
for Windows. The download file includes:
1. the Truetype font in the non-unicode encoding used with all of our software (TibetDoc, TibetD Reader, and so on);
2. the Truetype font in the non-unicode special encoding which is useful for both Windows, Macintosh,
and web-pages and which is called TibetanMachineWeb;
3. the Opentype font in the unicode version called "Tibetan Machine Uni".
Just download the file, uncompress it, and install the fonts using the usual
methods. There are five fonts in the Tibetan Machine font set, ten in the TibetanMachineWeb
font set, and one in the Tibetan Machine Uni font. Documentation for the typefaces is included in the download
file. The unicode version of the font can be used with versions of our TibetDoc and TibetD Reader software
greater than 5.200. For example, in TibetDoc, it can be used to send Tibetan e-mails, and so
forth. Note that, under Windows XP and less, the Uniscribe processor DLL will usually have
to be updated to a more recent version that the one included with Windows or Tibetan unicode
text will not be written correctly. Therefore, the needed version of the DLL file is included with
the fonts. In Windows Vista the DLL is already up to date and no updating is needed.
We put this typeface into the public domain under GNU licence some years ago. It is not the most elegant typeface
but it is a real workhorse that can be used for any purpose (which is why we made it freely available). The fonts
in the typeface are freely available and can be used for any purpose without further permission. If you want
to distribute them, you are supposed to do so with the licence and GNU licence, both of which are
included in the download file. The source files for the fonts were also put into the public domain under
the same licence. They are in Fontlab format for anyone who wishes to use them. The only thing to remember
with this licence is that the fonts are still copyright to the author, Lotsawa Tony Duff, and that copyright
should be honoured. The fonts can be freely copied and given to others as just stated but we would
prefer it if the fonts were not made available for download on other sites but that a link to here
was provided; thank you!
You can see samples of the typeface in the documentation included with the download file or on
the sample page.
You can use this set of fonts for instance to view some of the free texts on our Padma Karpo Translation Committee
site that are in RTF format. The fonts will work in most programs, for example,
they will work in Word. Note that we do not provide technical support for the use of the fonts.
IMPORTANT: Windows Vista contains fundamental changes to the way that fonts are
displayed. Because of these changes, a handful of characters in earlier versions
of all of our typefaces do not display under Windows Vista. We have rebuilt
the fonts so that they do now display correctly. If you have
been using these fonts already and have switched to Windows Vista, you should uninstall all of the
TibetanMachine and TibetanMachineWeb fonts (five and ten in the set respectively) first, then download
and install the new ones contained here. The old fonts can be distinguished from the new by looking
at the version. The old ones are less than 5 and the new ones are 5.00. More information
about compatibility of our fonts and software with Windows Vista can be found on the updates page.

Replacement Typefaces for Monier Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary under Vista
The electronic edition of the Monier Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary
produced in Koln, Germany, in the 1990's uses custom fonts for the input box in the main
window of the search program and in the Word version of the lookup, too. These fonts
were not correctly produced. The result is that they work in Windows versions up to
and including XP but do not work in Windows Vista, which is has more stringent
requirements for fonts. The fonts were re-generated by us so that they would
work in Windows Vista. Download the file here and use the three fonts in it
instead of the three that came with the dictionary and you will be able to use
the dictionary in Windows Vista.
If you are not sure what to do, install the package into Vista. When you
type in the lookup program, you will see that symbols instead of letters appear. Use the
fonts provided by us to replace the existing ones (just right click on a font from us,
choose install, and say yes to replace when asked). Now you should see the expected
letters when you type in the lookup program.

Tibetan! 5 (Windows) files:
A variety of useful files from the distribution diskettes for the Windows version of the Tibetan! program are available here for free download. The full manual is made available because it contains many details of pecha
production, Tibetan formatting rules, and Tibetan grammar which are not
readily available. Even if you are using another program to write your
Tibetan text, you will find the chapters on formatting and pecha production
indispensable.
